Vision
To become an excellentin teaching, learning and research in the country.
Mission
To bring out the potential of students by imparting qualityteaching and learning.
To provide an environment where students can learn and becomeproficient users of mathematics.
To amplify the importance of mathematics in other disciplinesand in the physical world.
To develop analytical skills for problem-solving throughdedicated teaching and motivation.
Name of Programme: (B.Sc. Mathematics / B.A.Mathematics)
According to Srinivasa Ramanujan “The beauty ofmathematics lies in its simplicity and complexity at the same time.” Mathematics provides an effective way ofbuilding mental discipline and encourages logical reasoning and mental rigor. It provides foundational knowledge and skills for other subjects such assciences, art, commerce, economy, etc.
Objectives:
i. Develop the ability to think critically, logically andanalytically and to use mathematical reasoning in everyday life.
ii. Create deep interest in learning mathematics.
iii. Communicate mathematics effectively by written, computationaland graphic means.
iv. Develop broad and balanced knowledge and understanding ofdefinitions, concepts, principles and theorems.
v. The program covers the full range of mathematics from ClassicalCalculus to modern Number Theory. Thus it provides learners sufficientknowledge and skills to enable them undertake further studies in mathematicsand its allied areas on multiple disciplines.
vi. Pursuing a degree in mathematics introduces the students to anumber of interesting and useful ideas and helps them prepare for job exams inthe field of education, research, government sector, business sector andindustry.
Communication Skills and Problem Solving Ability:
i. To communicate various concepts of mathematics effectively usingexamples and their geometrical visualizations.
ii. To use mathematics as a precise language of communication inother branches of human knowledge.
iii. To communicate long standing unsolved problems in mathematics.
iv. To show the importance of mathematics as precursor to variousscientific developments since the beginning of the civilization.
v. To explain the development of mathematics in the civilizationalcontext To solve problems in computer graphics using concepts of linearalgebra.
vi. To solve various models such as growth and decay models, andpopulation models etc. using techniques of differential equations.
vii. To solve linear system of equations, linear programming problemsand many more.
Information and Research-related skills literacy:
- Capability to use appropriate software’s to solve system of equations and differential equations such as MATLAB software etc.
- To know about the advances in various branches of mathematics.
- Capability for inquiring about appropriate questions relating to the concepts in various fields of mathematics.
- To work independently and do in-depth study of various notions of mathematics.
- To identify unethical behavior such as fabrication, falsification or misrepresentation of data and adopting objective, unbiased and truthful actions in all aspects.
- To think, acquire knowledge and skills through logical reasoning and to inculcate the habit of self-learning.
Programme Outcomes:
Disciplinaryknowledge: Capabilityof demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of mathematics and understanding ofone or more disciplines which form a part of an undergraduate programme ofstudy.
Programme Specific Outcomes:
DSE (Discipline Specific Elective) provide the students withliberty of exploring his interest within the Mathematics.
SEC(Skill Enhancement Courses) enables the student to acquire the skillrelevant to Mathematics.
Different courses of this programme: -
Differential Calculus (MATH101TH): -
This course will enable the students to assimilate the notions of limits, continuity, and differentiability of functions at a point. Sketch curves inCartesian and Polar co-ordinate systems, expansion of functions usingMaclurin’s and Taylor’s theorems, curvature, asymptotes and curve tracing.
Differential Equations (MATH102TH): -
This course will enable learners to learn various techniques of getting exactsolutions of solvable first order differential equations and linear differentialequations of higher order and also introduced to partial differential equationsand their solutions.
Real Analysis (MATH201TH): -
Learners will get concept of real line, completeness property, real sequences, infinite series, uniform convergence and power series.
Algebra (MATH202TH): -
Students will learn about algebraic structures, groups, subgroups, their types;and rings, sub rings, integral domains and fields.
Integral Calculus (MATH309TH): -
This SEC will lead to know more about integration, rectification and quadratureand to solve double and triple integrals.
Vector Calculus (MATH310TH): -
Students learn to find gradient divergence, curl, and vector integration and tosolve problems using Gauss, Green and Stokes theorem.
Matrices (MATH301TH) : -
In this course students learn more about different types of matrices, correlatematrices and linear transformation, compute Eigen values, Eigen vectors, concept of vector spaces, subspaces, solution of linear equation usingmatrices.
Numerical Methods (MATH304TH): -
This course will help in administering numerical methods for solutions ofnon-linear equations, iterative methods for solution of linear equations.Students will know about interpolation, differential operators, numericaldifferentiation and numerical integration methods.
Probability and Statistics (MATH313TH): -
This course will change one’s sight of viewing different experiments bydefining sample space, probability, providing in depth knowledge of differentprobability distributions and joint probability distribution functions.
Transportation and Game Theory (MATH317TH): -
No mathematics programme is complete without operations research. Operationsresearch is that branch of mathematics which helps in optical decision makingin various business situations. So, this SEC deals with solution oftransportation problems, assignment problems and game theory.
